Chapter 18

Saturday Morning

Aiden sat in his truck watching for Eduardo Menveo to enter the park. Three minutes after 7 a.m., he arrived on foot. He looked around, then opened the passenger door and climbed in.

“Where’s your car?”

Eduardo looked nervous. “I don’t like meeting you; someone could have followed me. The only thing worse than going to jail is being strung up by my balls and getting lynched for being a snitch.”

Aiden just nodded. There was no point in arguing facts. “What did you find?”

“Well, there were no dead bodies, thank God. I kept waiting to see one as I flashed the light in the boxes, but nothing.”

Aiden chuckled. “That’s good. I’d hate for you to drop dead of a heart attack. See any drugs?”

“No. Just boxes and a couple of bar-top tables and chairs.”

“Anybody see you?”

Eduardo shook his head and then glanced around, looking for spying eyes. “Security is shit. Nobody was around either.”

“Were you able to reset the alarm?”

“Now, about that . . .” Eduardo shrugged. “I couldn’t figure it out.”

Aiden frowned. “Christ! Must not have been that shitty of an alarm system.”

“Hey, I got in, looked around, and no one’s the wiser. When they come in tomorrow, it will just be off. They’ll just think they forgot to set it.” He saw Aiden’s look of doubt and added, “It was old. They won’t know. Trust me.”

Aiden dropped it. “What was in the boxes?”

“Liquor, some illegal cigars, and some sparkly clothes. You know, like costumes for strippers. Feathers and all.”

“What about the computer?”

“That was a piece of cake.” He handed over a flash drive. “There was a paper calendar on the desk. I took photos. All on the drive.”

“Thanks.” Aiden started his truck engine.

Eduardo touched the truck handle and paused before getting out. He looked back at Aiden. “Are we done now?”

“Maybe. Stay out of trouble, Eduardo.”

He opened the door, mumbling profanity, and slammed the door.

Aiden backed out of the park. He couldn’t care less how Eduardo felt.

The drive to the field office was fast for a Saturday morning. He arrived at 7:30 a.m. and signed in at the secured gate. Upstairs in his office, Jonas was waiting on him.

“I was just about to call you. We got the lab work back on the prints found in the garbage.” He handed Aiden a sheet of paper. “We got one matching print in our system!”

Aiden took a seat and looked over the paperwork. The image of a black-and-white fingerprint was at the top with notes underneath it. The print matched to an unknown woman who had been seen meeting Wayne back in January. The meeting had lasted for about thirty minutes, until 1 a.m., inside The Chandelier Bar. The glass had been bagged by an insider, a waitress working the club. The woman had yet to be identified. On the next page was a grainy photo of the woman in question: slender with light hair and light skin. It was the best the tech guy could do with the image in a dark nightclub with strobe lights flashing in all directions.
